The Designer Nudge is an undergraduate thesis project developed by Bree Galbraith. It takes the concept of “nudging” and uses it as a means to design for behaviour change. The project is a place for designers, students and others interested in the subject to “get their feet wet,” and to use The Designer Nudge as a building block and catalyst for further thought and possible research.

Emily Carr Capital Campaign Feature

I was recently featured in the Emily Carr University of Art + Design Capital Campaign, “The Big Idea.”

“A fourth year design student, Bree is an inspiring example of success. In addition to winning multiple scholarships, she has also published a children’s book. A mother of two young children, Bree intends to pursue her interest in designing social and affordable housing for non-profits.”

Design Futures

The following interviews are part of a larger project I undertook with classmate, Solveig Johannessen, for a third-year Directed Studies in Design Futures in 2010. We conducted these interviews with Emily Carr alumni to gather knowledge about design practices, methodologies, experiences and advocay, while simultaneously taking the opportunity to showcase former students of Emily Carr University. The interviews were prepared with two specific audiences in mind; Current, the Design Research Journal, and the Design°, which both are web based publishing mediums for design research and degree content respectively.

The content was prepared by Solveig and myself under the direction of our professor, Deborah Shackleton, and the interviews were filmed on location and then I edited them to create summaries of the interviews for the Design° and Current websites.

We are excited to share with you the outcomes of our project, and to create a legacy for Emily Carr, sharing the experiences and insights of alumni!

Happy to report that I have been selected to travel to Kolding, Denmark for the 2012 DesignCamp!
“The DesignCamp is an annual, recurring event at Kolding School of design. For two weeks, it joins Danish and international students, companies, designers, researchers, and others with an interest in design in addressing global challenges and solving common issues based on a current theme. The DesignCamp offers an intense design process for students as well as open conference days with talks, cases and workshops for

A 3rd year communication design studio project, Core Design Studio V, considered the challenge of nurse-to-nurse communications during shift changes. Current systems have focused on paper or web-based education and information recording, but compliance rates are low. In conjunction with the Vancouver Coastal Health Authority, our class conducted primary and secondary research and proposed solutions to the nurses and health authority. Below is the process book from my team, which consisted of Craig Fleisch, Hana Stefan and myself.

From Autodesk.com comes a review of the interactive document I designed for the Okala Ecodesign Strategy Wheel this past spring:

One of the clearest resources on the basics of sustainable design come from three designer-professors, Philip White (ASU), Louise St. Pierre (ECUAD), Steve Belletire (SUIC). As the team behind the Okala Ecodesign effort, they’ve been teaching sustainable design for years, and spreading knowledge through their guides and curricula. We’re excited to support their latest project.

The Okala team have just launched a free version of the Okala Ecodesign Strategy Wheel. Downloadable on the Autodesk Exchange App Store, it’s a terrific high-level rundown of sustainable design strategies. It’s pictured here on an iPad, but you can download it right to your desktop as a PDF.

Meet Bree, a published author!

It’s official! My children’s book, Once Upon a Balloon, is going to be published by BC’s Orca Books next year! The story was originally written as a class project in 2011, and I sent it out to a few Canadian publishers on the advice of my teacher, Shin Minegishi.

I am very excited about this book, I believe the story is timeless, and will touch many people. Orca has also chosen a phenomenal illustrator for the book, and here is a link to her website.
